Chicken Charlie Panay

| Posted in , , , | Posted on 12/08/2011 08:06:00 AM

Finally tried Chicken Charlie! I went there last December 6 and decided to compare it with my Bonchon Chicken experience. To be fair with Bonchon, I ordered my Charlie’s hot and spicy chicken wings for takeout and waited for 45 minutes before eating.

"We are on a dry run"

Chicken Charlie Panay Ave had their soft opening just December 3 2011. The place is at the corner of Panay and Timog Ave, just behind BPI. The place is very neat and has six 4 seater tables and one 2 seater table. The staff is very friendly and dealt with my orders and inquiries politely.

Like Bonchon, the chicken wings retained its crispiness after 45 minutes. But the taste is different because of the soy garlic. I found the hot and spicy not as hot as Bonchon’s but I do like the flavour. I also tried their potato wedges, which I find a little salty for my taste. I enjoyed eating the Chicken Charlie bowl, the price of Php 59 is reasonable for a bowl of extra crunchy chicken strips with soy garlic sauce and rice.

I am not a food blogger or a critic, so I don’t have to say which double fried chicken is better. I can say that their foods are cheaper but they don’t offer a lot of food variety. I do like to go back to Chicken Charlie (like I always go back to Bonchon) and try the rest of their menu. Good thing Panay Ave is very near to our place.

Experience Windows Phone 7 Using Your Android and iOS Device

Microsoft is now offering the Windows Phone 7 experience on your iOS and Android device via a WP Emulator. This won’t change the operating system of your phone, but will give you the feel of using it.

Microsoft is offering Windows Phone 7 experience/demo on phone running on iOS or Android. The steps are simple, just come back with your phone and visit http://aka.ms/wpdemo to check out the demo. The demo lets you swipe through Windows Phone and experience the mobile OS first hand. Microsoft populated the photos and contacts to make the demo feel as real as possible. There’s also a blue dot that’ll help you navigate the important parts of the demo. I gave it a test run and enjoyed using it for a few minutes. It does a reasonable job of mimicking the Mango interface and is as close as you can get to the real thing without going to a store and handling an actual phone.

It’s about time we revive Filipino Action Movies.

Nicasio Asiong Salonga (1924-1951) is notorious gang leader who was killed by Ernesto Reyes on killed on Coral street in October 8, 1951. He was born and rasied Tondo aftwerwards he become gang leader Asiong met and married Alembong Salonga his life is inspired movies starting Joseph Estrada as Salonga in 1963 followed by Asiong Meets Alembong (1963) and Salonga Brothers (1965) also the film was remade twice starting Rudy Fernandez in 1978 and George Estregan Jr in 1990.

I know that we are not good at making action movies, but from the looks of it, the Asiong Salonga, Manila Kingpin is going to a new and better direction.

Dance Central 2

| Posted in , , , , , | Posted on 11/08/2011 09:00:00 PM

I bought the Dance Central 2 game at SM North Annex for just around Php 1,600, which is Php 400 cheaper compared to Datablitz’s. My niece was nagging me about purchasing one since the day the advertisement was shown on the XBox Dashboard. I like the cheaper price because one need to purchase 400 Microsoft points ($4.99) to download the old songs from the Original Dance Central game. I used my PayPal account to purchase the Microsoft Points (will blog about it later). There’s also a 240 Microsoft points free when you purchase the game, you need to redeem it using the code given. You can use it to purchase a song from the game add ons on the Dashboard.

Dance Central 2 will not disappoint those who love the original Dance Central game. 2 players can play at the same time for co-op, battle and crew challenge. The 2nd player can join the game any time even when the song is already playing. Voice command is added; you can now choose a song or pause using your voice, although I like the gesture command better. Movements are accurately tracked by the Kinect sensor. I also like the integration of calorie counter in all modes and you can count all the calories you lose since the first time you activated the exercise mode. Exercise mode also have different categories like warm up, cardio, intervals, sprint etc. It will play a song according to the mode you choose. I tried the cardio today on Medium difficulty and it sure did made my heart pumping for 17 minutes.

Here’s a video of my niece dancing Bad Romance on Dance Central 2.

Oh, by the way, there’s no Teach Me How to Dougie” on Dance Central 2. I hope they’ll have it as an add on someday.

The first Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer was released yesterday. There's no announcement yet when to expect the game to be released but sure thing is the setting of the game will be back to San Andreas, the big City of Los Santos.

I hope to see improvement to the graphics of the game. I do love the livelier colors used in the game. GTA 5 will be available both for XBox 360 and PS3 next year.

Iris for Android, an Alternative for Siri

0

| Posted in , , , , , , | Posted on 10/22/2011 05:59:00 AM

So you own an Android phone and you’re jealous of iPhone 4S owners having Siri as their personal assistant. Luckily, the awesome people of Dexetra created an application for Android (in just 8 hours!) called Iris (spell backward and you know what it is), you can now experience Siri like application for your Android.

Iris is not as good and functional as Siri, but I had fun playing with it. It let me compose a message by talking to it and send it to the person on my phonebook. It also let me call a person on my contact list. I did encounter some problems with some names not properly identified like the name “Jomar” who Iris understood as John Mayer. Iris is also good with having conversation on general information and when it doesn’t understand you, it’ll give you some random funny answer or question.

Iris is still in Alpha version and can be downloaded for free on the Android Market. If you want other personal assistant application, you can try other alternative like Vlingo which is more accurate and functional but not half as fun.

XBox Live Gold Support Philippines

2

| Posted in , , , , , , , | Posted on 10/19/2011 12:21:00 PM

Maybe the only time a Filipino will experience his XBox Live Gold account is when the person first registered to XBox Live. A month free of XBox Live Gold is given to every user who registers. But after that one month period, that person will be blocked every time he wants to purchase something from the XBox 360 Dashboard, from Micosoft points, XBox Live Gold membership up to downloading of Add Ons and games. Yes, the XBox Live Silver is forever free, but it’s only good for updates and free demos and you can't enjoy playing online without the Gold account.

The problem lies in the lack of regional support to some places. You’ll encounter this problem when you are required to fill out the billing form when you’re about to purchase something in XBox Live. So, how do people from unsupported regions go around this problem? Simple, just put the required info and when asked for the State and Zip Code, write recognized State and Zip Code on that region. In my case, my default region is United States (I don’t bother to change it to Singapore or any place), so I chose California on the drop down menu as my State, wrote Beverly Hills as my City and “90210” as my Zip Code. Did it work? It sure did. I tried upgrading my XBox Live to Gold account (the $2 promo for a couple of months) by linking my PayPal account. Yes, PayPal is now accepted as a form of payment in XBox Live. It’s easier to edit your billing info by going online using your PC than your XBox 360’Dashboard. My account was automatically upgraded and decided to purchase some Microsoft Points which I used for Downloading new songs for Dance Central for Kinect.

I suggest the same method for those guys who want to purchase something from XBox Live. The other method of payment is through credit card which you can also add as your payment option via their website. You can also purchase Microsoft point cards on some XBox 360 console/game sellers around Philippines.

Motorola Droid RAZR

I don’t like the old Motorola RAZR. Never in my mind did I dream to buy any mobile phone from Motorola until today. The new Motorola Droid RAZR suddenly rises to the top of the Android smart phones. From hardware to software, I’m sure many will be impressed by this device.

The new RAZR is impossibly thin with a stainless steel core, a Gorilla Glass screen and a nanotechnology Splash-guard that protects even the electrical boards inside. The 7.1mm thick mobile device is the world’s slimmest phone.  It features a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, covered with Gorilla Glass on a very slim and lightweight Kevlar-infused body. It has 2 cameras, with a 8MP snapper for the main camera. It's powered by an OMAP 4430 chipset with a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 1GB of RAM. Onboard storage is 16GB, but if you need more it's expandable via a microSD card.

The new Motorola RAZR is expected to be available worldwide on November. Do you think it will be a worthy iPhone 4 competitor?

Gamepad for NBA 2k12 for PC

| Posted in , , , | Posted on 10/12/2011 10:36:00 AM

Looking for a gamepad for NBA 2k12 for PC? Try CDR King’s generic gamepads. I tried using their USB Dual Shock Gamepad for PhP 180 last year for NBA 2k11 and so far it’s still working until today.

My year old gamepad. Will work on 2k12 too.

You can choose for a USB gamepad resembling a Playstation controller or an XBox gamepad. You just have to configure the buttons to work on your NBA 2k12.

Check out CDR King’s list of gamepads.

Check out my post on using the generic gamepad on NBA 2k11.

I don’t have a copy yet of NBA 2K12 for PC because I’m playing it on XBox 360. But if you want to use cheat engine on My Player mode of NBA 2K12, I’m sure my old post about doing it on 2K11 will give you an idea how to do it since the set up is basically the same.

Also, you guys might want to check out my post on using a generic gamepad for NBA 2K series. If anyone of you guys tried the PC version of NBA 2k12 with cheat engine, please leave a comment below.

KaLui Restaurant Puerto Princesa, Gastronomic and Visual Feast

| Posted in , , , | Posted on 10/05/2011 11:25:00 AM

If you’ll ask the locals of Puerto Princesa “What is the best place to eat”, most likely you’ll be given 2 options, Badjao Seafront Restaurant and KaLui. We tried both places and they are both superb. But if you’ll ask me to choose only one between the two, I’ll say go to KaLui.

KaLui is more accessible between the two, located at Rizal Avenue, especially if you don’t have a car with you. From The Legendary Hotel, it took us only around 15 minutes ride and an 8 PhP via a tricycle. By the way, you need to phone in for a reservation because the place is usually full of tourists and locals (we asked the hotel to make a reservation for us).

Kalu -where?!

We got a reservation for 9:00PM and got there 10 minutes early but we were allowed to get in because there are vacant tables that time. Nothing special about the outside look of the place, no parking area and you’ll just see a sign bearing the name of the place made of wood and a “bahay kubo” behind it. But wait till you get inside, the bahay kubo transforms into a very different place. You’ll see paintings, art installations with cool lights and a very nice ambience (the comfort room is uber neat too!). You’ll be asked enter the place barefoot, you have to leave your footwear on baskets at the entrance.

Barefoot for that "parang nasa bahay lang" feeling.

Those fruits are real.

Resto or art exhibit?
Japanese style.

Most on the menu are seafood and prices are not too expensive. The presentation of the food is great and you don’t have to wait too long for it to arrive. We ordered KaLui Special of the Day Set, composed of Fish Steak, Prawns, Veggies of the Day, Steamed Fish with Black Beans Sauce, Rice and Starters. I also asked for the Kilawin and a bottle of my favourite beer.

I love menus with uncomplicated choices.:)
Thank God for antihistamines!
Kila-WIN!

Mixed fruits for dessert.

Mango with bagoong and seaweeds.

You'll never guess what this is. It's an eggplant...
I’ll definitely suggest KaLui to my friends. If you're in Puerto Princesa, just ask the tricycle drivers to take you to KaLui. Trike drivers there are friendly and serves as tourist guide too. KaLui is a great place to feast both for your stomach and your eyes.

Somewhere else in the globe some lucky guys got a hold of their NBA 2K12, people here in the Philippines have to wait for the October 7th release date. I can’t wait to try it on my XBox 360 and 40” Sony Bravia. It’ll the first NBA game I’ll be using on my XBox 360, I played the NBA 2K11 on my PC. I guess there’ll be no cheat engine for me this time...

Below is a review of NBA 2K12 for XBox 360.

You can grab one at Datablitz stores for around PhP 2600. NBA 2K12 is available for PC, XBox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP and Wii.

Update: Bought my NBA 2K12 at Datablitz Trinoma last October 7th for PhP 1,895. It's awesome!

Crocodile Farm in Puerto Princesa

Do you know that the former biggest Crocodile was caught in Palawan? “Rio”, named after the place where she was caught is a 12 foot croc caught by Ernesto “Lolong” Coñate and his team. He was later tasked to catch the present biggest crocodile “Lolong”, but unfortunately he died because of hypertension last August 28th. Lolong the croc was named after Ernesto the croc hunter.

If you want to see how huge Rio is, visit Irawan Crocodile Farm in Palawan. For an entrance fee of 40 PhP, you can see crocs and other indigenous animals.

Rio, the crocodile
Crocs...
More crocs!
Crocodile Meat, tasty tasty!

You can also try holding the bear cat and a photograph for free and a little croc for 30 PhP.

This is my first time to try the Blogger App for iPad.:) Arrived at Puerto Princesa Airport just a few minutes past 12 via Cebu Pacific. The flight went smooth. We will be staying here at The Legend Hotel. Will update later.

Update: Tried using the Dolphin Browser in my Android phone to update, it's better than the Blogger for iPad App.

Very tiring day. Been to the crocodile farm, Baker's Hill and other places. We're now back in our hotel room.

I Love Chicken Bon Chon!

0

| Posted in , , | Posted on 9/23/2011 02:19:00 AM

I was walking around Robinson’s Galleria yesterday and passed by Chicken Bon Chon. Since I heard a lot of good things about this place, I decided to give it a try. But since I was alone, I ordered 6 pcs. chicken wings hot and spicy and 2 fish tacos for takeout.

For the takeout test, it took me 45 minutes to get home and I was surprised how the chicken wings retained its crispiness. It is so flavourful and the hot and spicy did not disappoint my spicy tongue.

Since my 9 year old niece, Alexia, did not want to try the hot and spicy chicken wings, I gave her one of the fish tacos. She’s a really picky eater but did not hesitate on trying the fish taco (she judges the food as edible or not just by the look of it). And when I asked her if she liked it, she said “nagustuhan ko”.

I will definitely be going back to Chicken Bon Chon and will recommend it to my friends.

How to Change Back to Old Facebook Layout? (September 2011)

0

| Posted in , , , , | Posted on 9/21/2011 02:02:00 AM

The new Facebook, love it or hate it. Just the same day with the official launching for all of Google+, Facebook did some major changes from notifications, size of pictures (bigger), News Feed, addition of Subscriptions, Smart Lists and even with their email notifications.

Every time something changes, there’ll be 2 reactions, it’s whether you’ll like it or hate it. If you like the new Facebook layout, good for you. But if you want to reverse it back to how it looks, here’s something you may want to try.

  • Go to Account Settings.
  • Go to Language.
  • Select English UK.

I tried it and it worked on my Facebook Profile. If you changed your mind and want to adopt the new Facebook Interface, just change the Language back to English US.

HTC Sensation XE with Beats by Dr. Dre

1

| Posted in , , | Posted on 9/17/2011 11:36:00 AM

Not good news for those who bought their HTC Sensation early, the dual core Android got an upgrade. Announced to be released this October, the new Sensation XE may be the perfect Android phone. It is the first phone to be shipped with Beats Audio with a special pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.

You might worry about the battery of the new Sensation XE since buyers will obviously use it a lot for listening to music, but HTC got it covered by upgrading the battery to 1730 mAh. It builds on the original HTC Sensation adding a speedier 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The Sensation XE features a 4.3-inch qHD screen, 768MB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video recording.

Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones

Another thing to expect, a more expensive price tag...

Unlimited Messaging and Call Services for Mobile Phones

0

| Posted in , , , , | Posted on 9/16/2011 01:08:00 AM

If you read my last post about Unlimited Messaging Promos provided by Telcos here in the Philippines and think that it’s too costly to subscribe to these services, you might want to explore other options to stay in touch with your love ones.

I am not a heavy texter and I rarely call someone unless it’s urgent. But I still manage to keep up with my family and friends by using Free Services using my mobile phone. But the thing is, it’s not really 100% free. If you have an Internet connection and have a WiFi enabled phone, then you’ll do just fine. There are number of Instant Messaging applications you can use to communicate with your friends.

Facebook Chat

Well, almost everyone’s in Facebook right? You can use this to talk to your friends whenever they’re online. I have a Facebook for Android installed on my phone and it’s running 24/7. The only time I can’t send/receive message is when my portable router is out of juice or when there’s no signal (rarely happen with Sun Broadband).

Skype for Mobile

What I love about Skype is you can make high quality voice and video calls with it. The setback is, not most of your friends have a Skype account.

Yahoo Messenger
Yahoo is the favourite email service of Filipinos and many have a YM account. What I don’t like about YM is the presence of Spam Bots that will send you tons of messages the moment you log in. It’s still dependable though but you may not read old messages after logging out.

Viber

Viber is an application for iOS and Android devices that let users send messages and call each other using the Internet. Once installed, you don’t have to log in again even after rebooting your phone. The sound quality is pretty good (depending on connection).

There are other applications that provide Instant Messaging Services like Nimbuzz, eBuddy, etc., you just have to find what’s perfect for you. Nimbuzz is a great app that let you chat with YM, Facebook and other IM services under one account. The thing is you’ll be able to save especially when talking to your friends overseas. These apps are recommended to those who have WiFi connection or unlimited data plans on their mobile phones.

Sun Cellular Textall20: Unlimited Texts to All Networks

| Posted in , , , , , | Posted on 9/12/2011 06:30:00 PM

Sun Cellular is now joining Globe and Smart with providing unlimited texting (SMS) service to all networks. Starting today, September 13, 2011, you can enjoy TEXTALL20. This is available through Sun Xpressload or Sun Regular Load conversion.

Sun’s TEXTALL20 is cheaper compared to what the other networks are offering but it doesn’t have a free call and mobile Internet browsing.

For Comparison:

Globe Telecoms’ Unlimited Text to all network promo:

SUPERUNLI ALLTXT 25: Unli texts to all networks, 1 hour of mobile internet and 10 minutes of calls to Globe/TM, valid for 1 day.

Smart Buddy’s Unlimited Text to all network promo:

LAHATTxt Unli 25: Text, call and surf: Unlimited all-net texts + 10 minutes SMART-to-SMART calls + 25mb consumable internet for 1 day.

Facebook for Android Can't Leave Comment Bug

14

| Posted in , , , , , , | Posted on 9/08/2011 12:00:00 PM

The Facebook for Android Application is getting worse with every update. There was an issue before with News Feed not working properly and now users can’t leave a comment on other users’ status. Another thing, when posting a status using the Facebook for Android app, it would only show “posted via mobile”, not the usual “posted via Android” thingy. My suspicion is the old problem with the News Feed is not really fixed and Facebook kind of ported the mobile version of Facebook to the News Feed page.

If you’re a Facebook for Android user, you can leave a comment on a status by either waiting for somebody to leave a comment first, or by going to the user’s profile and leaving a comment on the status. I recommend the latter.  If you guys are experiencing the same problem, hit the comment button below.

Yahoo Mail for Android Notification Bug

0

| Posted in , , , , , | Posted on 9/08/2011 04:42:00 AM

My Yahoo Mail for Android used to work perfectly, but this morning it started to act weird. I was surprised when I heard the notification sound go off as if there were tons of messages going through my inbox. When I picked up my phone, I did saw there were more than 30 unread messages, which is a surprise since I usually get an average of 8 messages overnight (3 accounts combined). But when I checked my inbox, there were only around 7 unread messages. So, I thought it was just a little bug. But after a few minutes, I received the same 30+ unread notifications again with just 1 unread message in the inbox. It happened for every mail I was getting.

So, I decided to check if other Yahoo Mail Users are getting the same problem. I checked the Android market and there I read comments of the same problem on the Yahoo Mail for Android Application page. My initial solution was to turn off the annoying new mail notification sound since it was interfering with my nap. I did try rebooting my phone but the notification problem was not solved. So, I tried the ultimate solution by uninstalling and reinstalling the Yahoo Mail application. The last step solved the bug and it is now working the perfectly.

Quadcore Android Tablets and Smartphones

If you think your dual core tablets and smart phones are super fast, you’ll surely be amazed with NVIDIA’s “Kal-el” quad core tablets expected as soon as October this year. Yes, it is named after Superman, who everybody knows has lightning speed. It is said to be 5x faster than Tegra 2.

Quad core powered smart phones are expected to be released next year. What manufacturer is still unknown as of the moment. It will not be a surprise if Kal-el will be called Tegra 3 as it will be the successor to Tegra 2.

Seagate announced today that it is shipping the highest capacity hard drive in the industry, the 4TB GoFlex Hard Drive. It is now available via www.seagate.com and selected online retailers at a suggested retail price of $249.99 USD.

“With the pre-loaded back up software, the GoFlex Desk external drive provides automatic, continuous back with encryption for all your files. The included USB 3.0 adapter also works with USB 2.0 ports making it easy to connect to your Windows or Mac computer. The adapter also features an illuminated gauge to display available space on the drive.”

I’m impressed with Seagate’s external hard drives. I’m personally using a 500 GB Free Agent as my back up, but it’s nearly full now with my collection of movies, MP3s Pictures and documents. Disk space is very important nowadays, since files get bigger in size. Video files used to be on an average of 750 MB, but now occupied around 1.5 GB. Cloud storage is an alternative, but it is costly and requires fast Internet connection. I think with a 4TB hard drive, I’ll never have to delete not so important files just to allow disk space for priority files.

HTC Desire HD Software Update

Received an update today for my HTC Desire HD. I was excited at first thinking that I’ll be getting the HTC Sense 3.0 after the update but turned out that it was just a minor update. My old software number was 2.37.707.3, which was updated to 2.50.707.4, same Android version of 2.3.3 and HTC Sense 2.1.

The update is for “Data transfer application enhancement” which is recommended for former BlackBerry users.

I know that I can get Sense 3.0 and even the unreleased HTC Sense 3.5 manually by flashing custom ROM to my device, but it will not guarantee full usability. So, it looks like I still have to wait for an official update from HTC. For those who want to risk and upgrade their HTC Desire HD, read and follow instructions at this forum.

How to Make an Android App of Your Website?

Do you want to make a mobile application for your blog or website but don’t know how? You’re lucky because you’re reading this awesome blog of mine and I’ll teach you how to make an Android app of your website. It’s so easy and it doesn’t require any programming skills.

Say hello to AppsGeyser. AppsGeyser is a web platform that allows normal people (like you and me) to convert any web content to apps for Android OS. Why create an app when people can easily enter your URL in their browser? Well, since the inception of apps, people prefer to access information by simply clicking on an icon than using the browser. It’s faster and it gives your website or blog a wow factor.

First, you have to register and make an account by going to this link.  After logging in your account, click on the “Create app now” button. After that, you’ll see 3 options: Create an app from Mobile website, web widget code or web page content. I chose the first option. The rest is no brainer, you’ll be asked to input your website URL, App Name, refresh time, description, icon, etc. After that, you can test the app on your Android device by scanning the QR Code or by downloading the app on your phone.

My blog's Android app installed on my HTC. Too lazy to change the icon...

If you want to publish and distribute your Android App on the Android Market, you have to register as a developer using your Google Account. But the problem is, you’ll have to pay $25 first to make an account. But you can distribute your new website app through AppsGeyser for free. If you want a preview of my app, go to this link.

Or scan the QR Code below.

You have the option to choose an icon and add tabs to your app pointing to other URLs. That’s it. Let me know if you tried AppsGeyser by leaving a comment below.
