Adipure: Adidas Barefoot Shoe

Many shoe companies want a share of the growing running barefoot trend. Popularized by the book “Born to Run”, it’s not a surprise you’ll see a lot of runners wearing their Vibram Five Fingers and other minimalist shoes. There are those who are even crossing the finish line of half and full marathons with bare feet (literally).

I tried running with VFF Bikila since March 2011, and since then I prefer using it than my other running shoes (mostly Adidas). The only time I finished a half marathon without my Bikila (after owning one) was at the The Northface Trail Run Cam Sur event last May. I love the VFF Bikila so much that I highly recommended it to my sister, who is also a runner.

Adidas, a company I respect for their running shoes, announced the release of a Vibram Five Fingers look alike Adipure. It will be released on November 2011. The announcement received mixed reactions from both running and non running community. Owners of VFFs said that it’s a clone of Vibram’s barefoot shoes; Adidas lovers said it looks cool and are looking forward the release date of the Adipure in the Philippines. Non runners also gave mixed reactions, saying that the shoe design is ugly while others are interested in sporting one. There are also those who said that there’s a chance Adidas will be sued by VFF the same way Fila was sued because of patent issues with Skeletoes.

My take on Adidas Adipure? I’m not totally against it; I’ll have my word when I get to try one. But for now, I’m sticking with my VFF Bikila. I just hope that competitions between minimalist and barefoot shoes will lead to lowering their price tags.:)

21KM Run With My VFF Bikila

Vibram FiveFinger users usually advice runners to go for short distances first when shifting to barefoot running. Being the hard headed person that I am, I decided to put on my pair of Bikila for a half marathon after just a couple of weeks of test runs.

My last half marathon was at the NatGeo Earth Day Run. I finished 4 minutes short from my PR, which is not bad for a new VFF Bikila user. Running with Bikilas provided me a great experience, my last pair of running shoe normally would leave my feet painful to finish my last 3 KM during a 21KM run, but the VFF was very comfortable to run with.  But I did suffer from a very painful left foot afterward that lasted for 5 days. I felt the pain only while walking, but that is something I expected. I should’ve let my feet adjust to the minimalist pair of shoes.

After a month of usage.

I checked the VFF Bikila for signs of wear and tear but was surprised that it handled the 21KM of concrete, asphalt and some dirt well. I will have a time to put it (and myself) on a much rougher test, a 22KM trail run next week at the North Face Trail Run in Camarines Sur. My friend was injured so he decided to give me his race kit. Until my next run...

I celebrated my 27th birthday last 27th of March. Been really busy celebrating with different set of friends and other stuff that’s why I was not able to update my blog. I started my birthday with a 21K run at the Globe Run 4 Home. I’m not going to talk much about the run since it was my worst PR. I started fast but was very slow when I hit the 16K mark. My left foot was killing me that time which resulted to a very long walk up to the finish line. I finished around 2:45, a 15 minutes longer than my last half marathon.

The highlight of the morning for me is when I dropped by the Vibram Five Fingers booth after the run. Barefoot Wear Inc gave 25% discounts on VFF Bikilas, which was just perfect since my sister sent me money to buy a pair of VFF. I chose a size bigger since I intend to use it with a five finger socks.

I tried running an injury free 10K recovery run with the Bikila and was really satisfied with it. I only tried it twice so I can’t make a thorough review about it. I’m planning to use it on my next half marathon, which is at the Natgeo Earth Day Run on April 10 2011. I hope it will help improve my running form and get a new PR.

I am currently having some issues with Blogger. I have difficulty opening the New Post Tab. Good thing is I found a way to get through with the problem.
